PLAYORENA THE ORIGINAL PROGRAM

The Eduplay Corporation, which began as Playorena Inc., opened it's first Playorena location in 1981. Playorena is the result of over twenty-five years of development starting in 1974 at a community center in Marin County, California, where Susan Astor designed a toddler program, called Kindergym. Together with her husband Michael, a psychotherapist, they created a developmentally appropriate recreational program based on the premise that self-acceptance is a major key to growth and development. They were also very aware that young children have a strong innate need for all different kinds of movement and motion. The program was highly innovative and inspired the book "Gymboree, Giving Your Child Physical, Mental, and Social Confidence Through Play" published by Doubleday in 1981, co-authored by Susan Astor and by the founder of Gymboree who used the original community center program created by Susan Astor as a basis for the Gymboree program that exists today. The Astors, having moved to New York, then started Playorena. Over the years in over one-hundred locations throughout the US and internationally, hundreds of thousands of children have benefited from the Playorena program. The Playorena program is designed to take toddlers step by step through the stages of early motor development while educating parents. Parental awareness of the sequential and individually differing nature of the developmental process is crucial in reducing the negative effects that result from unrealistic expectations. We know that a parent's confidence in their child, and in their own parenting skills provides the basis for the child's own self-confidence. The Playorena program and equipment have been continually refined and improved to enhance the development of self-esteem and the sensory-motor integration process that is the basis for higher learning. The Playorena "YES" environment enables a child to experience the essential activities of rocking, spinning, jumping, balancing, running, and crawling all of which are the "food" for mental and physical growth. Over the years new programs such as "MUSIC & MORE", PLAYORENA PLUS, and others have been designed and added to the ever expanding array of activities offered by the Eduplay Corp.
